Laura Towne, abolitionist, homeopathic physician and teacher from Pennsylvania, opened the first school for freed slaves in 1862 with her friend Ellen Murray, on St. Helena Island off the coast of South Carolina. Penn School, named after William Penn, closed in 1948 but still remains active as a community center for the Sea Islands.
