Waltz, a popular ballroom dance, is from the German word "walzen", whcih means to revolve. It evolved from the Landier around the 18th century and is characterized by a step, slide, and step in 3/4 time. The dancers revolve in perpetual circles,taking one step for each beat. Used to seeing traditional group dances, the turning and embracing couples at first shocked polite society.
