Waltz, a popular ballroom dance, is from the German word "walzen", whcih means to revolve. It evolved from the Landier around the 18th century and is characterized by a step, slide, and step in 3/4 time. The dancers revolve in perpetual circles,taking one step for each beat. Used to seeing traditional group dances, the turning and embracing couples at first shocked polite society. Paula Barnes "The Waltz" depicts the revolve in perpetul "circles".
