Annie Blair Etheridge was born May 3, 1844, in Detroit, Michigan. She joined the Daughters of the Regiment in the 2nd Michigan Infantry, serving as a war nurse. "Gentle Annie" was one of only two women awarded the Kearney Cross for "noble sacrifice and heroic service to the Union army." She never received pay for her service, but in 1886, she petitioned Congress and received a monthly pension of $25. Annie is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
