Named for John Brown's plan to start a war against slaveholders. On October 16, 1859, with 21 men, he started his assault at Harper's Ferry. Brown and his men took 60 hostages in hopes their slaves would join the fight. No slaves came forward. Brown was captured within 36 hours and executed for treason against the State of Virginia. The North, upon hearing of his execution, rang church bells and fired guns to show support for his cause.
