Ely Samuel Parker was a Native American Indian born in Indian Falls, NY in 1828. A dream interpreter told his mother that he would be distinguished among his nation as a peacemaker. Parker was with General Grant when General Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Parker was one of only two Native Americans to rise to a brigadier general's rank. In 1869, Grant appointed him Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
