John Stith Pemberton was a pharmacist and Civil War veteran from Georgia. After becoming addicted to morphine while recovering after the war, Pemberton created a "cure" for his addiction formulating a drink that was wine infused with the coca leaf. When the City of Atlanta outlawed the alcohol, the formula was adjusted, substituing sugar syrup and adding carbonated water, creating Coca Cola.
